Hello Reader, It's Kathy here! Revisiting familiar places at different stages of life can be surprisingly moving — and full of new discoveries. Thanks to the City of Melbourne, I recently joined their Chalk and Walk activity at Fawkner Park, part of the summer seniors program. Yes, sanctioned chalk graffiti! But this park was a very different place to the one I knew as a teenager back in the early 1970s. Back then, Fawkner Park meant winter softball matches — freezing winds, muddy slides, slippery balls and plenty of laughter. Returning decades later on a warm Saturday morning, the park felt transformed. Leafy oak avenues, golden elms, newly planted gingko trees, outdoor sculptures, and a wonderful Seniors Centre buzzing with activity. Our small group — adults and children together — was warmly welcomed by Nick, our guide. Armed with chalk and a few simple rules, we set about creating colourful messages for the community. Some were thoughtful, some philosophical, all uplifting. It lasted just an hour, but it was refreshing, social, and quietly joyful. There’s so much happening this summer, and many activities are free. I’m already planning a return visit for Fawkner Park’s historical walking tour on 7 March. Maybe I’ll see you there! You can explore the full Fawkner Park Summer Series program, and we’ve also rounded up more social activities here worth trying if you’re keen to get out and about. Warmly,

Hello Reader, I’m really pleased to share a new partnership with Transport Victoria — all about encouraging more of us to get out and explore using public transport. The timing couldn’t be better. With free public transport across Victoria throughout April and May, many people are rediscovering just how easy it is to move around without the cost of fuel or parking. But here’s the part I think is worth holding onto long after May ends:Seniors myki holders travel free every weekend, year-round,...
Hello Reader, It’s Marjie here, With ANZAC Day coming up this Saturday, I’ve found myself reflecting a little more deeply this year. My father served as a navigator in the RAAF during the war, and later in life — in his late 70s — he wrote a poem after visiting Bomana War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea. It was the only poem he ever wrote, and it’s stayed with me ever since. More recently, someone from my camera club used AI to recreate his voice and read the poem aloud. Hearing those words...
Hello Reader, I was chatting recently with Trevor, who’s just retired, when our conversation drifted — as it often does — to day trips and longer drives. He’s always been someone who enjoys getting out of the city, whether it’s a run to Ballarat, a wander through Bendigo, or a longer road trip when the mood strikes. What surprised me was how naturally he talked about doing all of this in his electric vehicle. Trevor bought his EV a couple of years ago and says he’s never looked back. For...
