Hello Reader, I’ve recently started following the journey of a Melbourne retiree named Michael Kerrisk — and I can’t stop thinking about it. At 63, Michael has set himself a remarkable challenge: travelling from Melbourne to London without getting on a single plane. No quick long-haul flight, no shortcuts. Instead, trains, buses, ships and a carefully mapped route that will take him through Southeast Asia, across China and into Central Asia — the “Stans” — before eventually reaching Europe. He left from Middle Park here in Melbourne, with the goal of arriving in Middle Park, Greenwich, in London. In a straight line it’s around 17,000 kilometres. In reality, it will be much more. What I find inspiring isn’t just the distance — it’s the mindset. This isn’t a gap year adventure. It’s a thoughtful, curious, later-in-life journey. He’s planned border crossings, visa challenges, overnight trains, and even trained by walking with his loaded backpack before leaving home. There’s something powerful about deciding that if you want to see the world, you’ll simply… go. Even if it takes longer. Especially if it takes longer. If you’re on Instagram, you can follow along with his journey here. Enjoy your week, P.S. If you’re on the Mornington Peninsula and have ever fancied treading the boards, Limelight Theatre Group at Tootgarook is calling for new cast members aged 55+ — no experience needed, just enthusiasm. Rehearsals Wednesdays 1–3.30pm. Call 0481 190 977 to join the fun.

Hello Reader, I’m really pleased to share a new partnership with Transport Victoria — all about encouraging more of us to get out and explore using public transport. The timing couldn’t be better. With free public transport across Victoria throughout April and May, many people are rediscovering just how easy it is to move around without the cost of fuel or parking. But here’s the part I think is worth holding onto long after May ends:Seniors myki holders travel free every weekend, year-round,...
Hello Reader, It’s Marjie here, With ANZAC Day coming up this Saturday, I’ve found myself reflecting a little more deeply this year. My father served as a navigator in the RAAF during the war, and later in life — in his late 70s — he wrote a poem after visiting Bomana War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea. It was the only poem he ever wrote, and it’s stayed with me ever since. More recently, someone from my camera club used AI to recreate his voice and read the poem aloud. Hearing those words...
Hello Reader, I was chatting recently with Trevor, who’s just retired, when our conversation drifted — as it often does — to day trips and longer drives. He’s always been someone who enjoys getting out of the city, whether it’s a run to Ballarat, a wander through Bendigo, or a longer road trip when the mood strikes. What surprised me was how naturally he talked about doing all of this in his electric vehicle. Trevor bought his EV a couple of years ago and says he’s never looked back. For...
