Why curiosity keeps life interesting

Hello Reader,

One of the things I enjoy most about running Seniors in Melbourne is hearing from readers who are doing life very much on their own terms.

The old idea of what life should look like after 60 doesn’t really apply anymore. Some people are travelling more than ever. Others are learning new skills, volunteering, starting small businesses, exploring new hobbies or simply enjoying the freedom to spend their days exactly as they choose.

There’s no single path — and that’s what makes it so interesting.

Every week I hear stories from readers who are discovering new corners of Melbourne, trying something they’ve never done before, or finally getting around to experiences they’d always meant to try “one day”.

In many ways, that’s what this community is all about: sharing ideas, encouraging curiosity and proving that life doesn’t slow down just because we reach a certain age.

If anything, it can become even richer.

So wherever you are in this stage of life — travelling, exploring locally, or simply enjoying a good day out with friends — I hope this week’s ideas give you a little inspiration.

Warmly,
Amy

Let's Explore Melbourne and Beyond

Step Back in Time in Charming Chiltern

Wander historic streets, browse antique shops and soak up the gold-rush charm of this beautifully preserved country town.

Lake Anderson Caravan Park provided the backdrop for my February visit to Chiltern. It was my second visit in three months, because this former Goldfields town has me hooked.
The tranquil view from my cabin verandah was well oaked and the oaks healthily acorned! Perhaps there’s a tree change coming!

Flavourhood Tours

Hello Reader, Last week I found myself in a room full of the people shaping the future of tourism in Victoria. The occasion was the Victorian Tourism Industry Council’s annual Vision Summit — where operators, event organisers, government and industry leaders gather to talk about what’s ahead. One thing became very clear. Tourism isn’t just a “nice to have”. It’s a $46 billion industry in Victoria — bigger than mining and agriculture combined. I reflected on why I started Seniors in Melbourne...

Mostly Mozart

Hello Reader, I’ve recently started following the journey of a Melbourne retiree named Michael Kerrisk — and I can’t stop thinking about it. At 63, Michael has set himself a remarkable challenge: travelling from Melbourne to London without getting on a single plane. No quick long-haul flight, no shortcuts. Instead, trains, buses, ships and a carefully mapped route that will take him through Southeast Asia, across China and into Central Asia — the “Stans” — before eventually reaching Europe....
