Why this story stayed with me

Hello Reader,

Aged care isn’t something most of us are rushing towards — but many are already helping a parent or loved one navigate it.

That’s why this piece from our contributor Kaye caught my attention.

Aged care: When it’s good, it can be very, very good

She shares the story of her mum, who made a thoughtful decision to move into care more than a decade ago — a choice that led to 12 years of connection, dignity, and genuine community.

What stood out to me is how much the experience was shaped not just by the place, but by her mum’s attitude — staying engaged, speaking up, and making the most of where she was.

It’s a practical, hopeful reminder that good aged care does exist — and that the right environment, combined with the right mindset, can make all the difference.

Enjoy your week,
Amy

P.S. If you’re thinking of something a little special this week, Overgrown Paths with the MCO opens in Melbourne with just a handful of performances. Let's Explore Melbourne and Beyond

Melbourne’s Hidden Garden Oasis

Tucked away from the bustle, Kaye discovers a peaceful garden perfect for a quiet stroll among greenery and blooms.

Who knew Melbourne had its very own secret garden, just a short walk from the transport hub of Flinders Street Station? I didn’t until, by chance, I heard it described in a radio interview with horticulturalist James Hitchmough in early January.

Hello Reader, It’s Amy here, I’ve been reading about the excitement around The Devil Wears Prada II lately, with Meryl Streep returning as the unforgettable Miranda Priestly — and it seems to be striking quite a chord with many people. Partly because it’s fun and nostalgic, of course. But also because we’re seeing more visible, confident older women on screen and in the workplace at a time when women over 50 are one of the fastest-growing groups in the workforce. One workplace expert...

Hello Reader, I’m really pleased to share a new partnership with Transport Victoria — all about encouraging more of us to get out and explore using public transport. The timing couldn’t be better. With free public transport across Victoria throughout April and May, many people are rediscovering just how easy it is to move around without the cost of fuel or parking. But here’s the part I think is worth holding onto long after May ends:Seniors myki holders travel free every weekend, year-round,...

Hello Reader, It’s Marjie here, With ANZAC Day coming up this Saturday, I’ve found myself reflecting a little more deeply this year. My father served as a navigator in the RAAF during the war, and later in life — in his late 70s — he wrote a poem after visiting Bomana War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea. It was the only poem he ever wrote, and it’s stayed with me ever since. More recently, someone from my camera club used AI to recreate his voice and read the poem aloud. Hearing those words...
