Our first Community Giveback — and why I chose Travellers Aid

Hello Reader,

Most weeks I'm in your inbox sharing a great café, a day trip idea, or something fun happening around Melbourne. This week, I wanted to share something a little different.

One thing I know about this community is that you're brilliant at spreading the word. So I've introduced something new — a quarterly Community Giveback — using what we're already good at to support the people doing great work in Melbourne.

Each quarter, we'll choose one local Melbourne charity and share their story across the newsletter and website. I’ll make a donation and share why we’ve chosen them, and for readers who are in a position to do so, there’ll be a simple way to make a small donation. For readers who'd rather help in other ways, we'll share stories and volunteering opportunities too.

This quarter, we've chosen Travellers Aid.

If you haven't come across them, Travellers Aid has been helping people get around Melbourne since 1916. They operate lounges and support hubs at Southern Cross, Flinders Street, Parkville, Melbourne Airport, Geelong, Ballarat and Seymour stations, offering everything from wheelchair hire and companion services, to accessible toilets, shower facilities, and personal care assistance. Many of their services are free. All of them are run with genuine care.

They're the kind of organisation that most of us don't think about until we — or someone we love — really needs them. And I think that's exactly why they deserve our attention.

Thank you for being part of this.

Now on to this week's outing inspiration. I hope you find something that interests you.

Amy x

P.S. We've had a little makeover! You might notice a refreshed logo and a few updates to the website. It's a cleaner, more polished look that reflects where Seniors in Melbourne is heading as we continue to grow and build more partnerships with tourism businesses across Victoria. I hope you like the new look.

Savour History at TJC

Enjoy the Taste & Temptation experience, where fine art, historic interiors and delicious treats come together in a truly memorable setting.

Our Host welcomed us with tea or coffee, served in genuine Wedgwood fine bone china, then gave a bit of history of Mr Johnston, his collection and how he bequeathed this collection to the people of Victoria. Mr Johnston must have been a bit quirky as he had specific instructions on how to display his collection of English Georgian, Regency and Louis XV artworks and furniture.

Hello Reader, It's Kaye here. Picture an Australian weatherboard house, frozen in time, sitting inside Chadstone's polished retail space — that's Rone's HOME installation. The Melbourne-based street artist, known for his immersive works in abandoned spaces, has created a nostalgic walk through a home and backyard the occupants seemingly left decades ago and never returned to. Every room is layered with faded furnishings, forgotten household items and dusty surfaces — quiet traces of a life...

Hello Reader, It’s Angie here, With all the recent changes to public transport fares, I thought I’d share a simple reminder that’s easy to overlook — free weekend travel for Seniors Myki holders is still available anywhere in Victoria. I decided to give it a proper test. Instead of driving, I hopped on a spotless McHarry’s bus into Geelong, caught the train into Melbourne, and made a day of it. First stop was the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, where I spent a happy hour wandering through...

ROME exhibition

Hello Reader, I recently asked some of our Seniors in Melbourne contributors to tell us about their Melbourne "happy place" — somewhere they return to for a sense of calm, connection, nostalgia, or simply because it makes them smile. The responses were wonderful. Some chose well-known landmarks, others picked quiet corners of the city. What I love is that the article isn't really about the places themselves. It's about the memories, routines and moments that have made those places special...
