Help us celebrate 3 years (and win a $50 Ticketek voucher)

Hello Reader,

Three years ago this month, I registered the domain name for Seniors in Melbourne and hoped there might be a few people out there who’d find our website and newsletter useful. Thanks to you, there are thousands.

To celebrate our 3rd anniversary, I’d love to hear from you. Nobody knows this space the way our community does, and I want to understand what you enjoy about Melbourne, what makes exploring it harder than it should be, and what you’d like to see more of here.

Take our anniversary survey: click here.

It takes about 7 to 9 minutes, and most questions are just a quick tick. There are no wrong answers. Your responses are reported as grouped results only, and I read every written comment myself.

There are prizes, too. When you finish, you can enter a draw for one of five $50 Ticketek vouchers. The draw is open to Victorian residents aged 18 and over. Entry is a separate step, so your details are never linked to your survey answers. The survey closes at 7:00 AM on Monday 16 November, and winners will be announced in this newsletter by Wednesday 9 December. You can read the full terms and conditions here.

I’ll share what I learn in a future bulletin, so you can see how it shapes what we cover next.

Thank you for being part of this community. I can’t wait to hear what you have to say.

Amy

Please click here to complete the survey and for your chance to win one of five $50 Ticketek vouchers. I look forward to sharing the insights!

Let's Explore Melbourne and Beyond

A Market Full of Memories

From weekly shopping to coffee rituals and Sunday brass bands, this inner-city market has become a much-loved stop with a story worth exploring.

“
Markets have been drawing me in since the mid-1970s, back when I first moved into a share house and started doing my own shopping. My daughter introduced me to Preston Market a few years ago, and it’s been my regular ever since, even though I now live out of town and have to plan my visits around a proper shopping list. In 2024, the market survived a long-running redevelopment threat when traders were offered new lease renewals, proof that community pressure still counts for something in this city.

Hello Reader, Paul here. About a decade ago, I was shocked to learn of the presence of the Eight-hour Day Monument on the corner of Russell and Victoria streets, on the northern edge of the city. The monument had been there for decades. I had just never noticed it. In my defence, many Melburnians fail to notice the Eight-hour Day Monument, possibly because we expect a certain bulk from our historic markers. This one is slender, as far as monuments go. During the Gold Rush era, workers formed...

Hello Reader, There’s a little extra sparkle at the Arts Centre this month. The Ian Potter State Theatre has officially reopened, six months ahead of schedule, after its first major refurbishment since 1984. We were lucky enough to join some of the heartwarming celebrations over the weekend, and it was a joy to see that grand golden curtain, with its hand-painted wildflowers and lyrebird’s tail, once again welcoming a crowd. The Arts Centre tour was wonderful, and if you’ve never been behind...
