What my grandfather’s apples taught me at Flinders Street

Hi Reader,

Chris here. When we stepped off the train at Flinders Street recently, I was hit with a memory I hadn’t thought about in decades.

My grandfather was an apple orchardist in Officer. About a century ago, he would send crates of fresh Jonathons by rail to a fruit stall nestled along the Flinders Street Station walkway. Those red apples were something special—not just because of their flavour, but because Grandpa had a clever trick up his sleeve. He’d stick paper cut-outs of the letters “V” and “R” on the green apples, and as they ripened in the sun, the letters stayed green against the red skin. A little nod to Victorian Railways, and an early take on branding, we joked.

Sharing that story with Amy and Terrie during our city outing gave us all a laugh—but it also reminded me how connected my family’s quiet, hard-working history is to the city itself.

I didn’t expect our adventures in Melbourne to stir so many memories, or to feel this meaningful. But here we are. With plenty more outings ahead, I’m genuinely looking forward to what comes next.

—Chris

P.S. Have you got a favourite Melbourne memory from years gone by? I’d love to hear it—just hit reply and share your story. It’s these little moments that make the city feel like home.

Migration, Identity & Joy

A place where history comes alive, and the spirit of migration, identity, and community thrives.

One exhibition was called “Identity”. This was most intriguing and was perhaps quite simple in its display but very thought-provoking. I can see different topics might stir up different emotions. Expressing Ourselves, What We Say and How We Say It, What We Are Called, are just a few of the topics showcased. What We Are Called challenged me to think about my own name, and why I prefer my shortened version to my full name.
I will ponder this for a while, it really has me going into deeper thinking. A very interesting morning.

They arrived in a sturdy, foil-insulated box with icepacks, keeping everything fresh—not frozen. Each 350g portion was just right for me and my husband, easy to heat, visually appealing when served, and tasted like a home-cooked meal." — Terrie

Hello Reader, It’s Diane here. I recently visited The Playground Project exhibition at the Incinerator Gallery, and what a fabulous space it turned out to be—for all ages! As a retired Early Years Educator, I found it particularly fascinating to see how playgrounds have evolved over time. The exhibition showcases incredible images and stories from around the world—back when risk-taking equipment and hard surfaces were the norm! It really made me reflect on how much has changed in the name of...

Hi Reader, What do we do when something’s not quite what we expected? We’ve been out and about, visiting Melbourne’s attractions and sharing all the highlights—but not every adventure is a perfect ten. Take the City Circle Tram. I’d hoped for an informative ride with a clear audio guide full of fun facts and local insight. But the tram was so noisy we could barely hear it! That said, the trip itself was still a nice way to roll through the city—and Chris and Terrie seemed to really enjoy the...

Hi there Reader, Since I last wrote, I’ve been busy collecting more senior-friendly ideas for making the most of Melbourne — whether it’s a lovely outing by tram, a hidden café worth visiting, or a performance that won’t break the bank. But I’ll admit — I’m not always the best at asking for help spreading the word. So here goes...
