A Wonderful Team and a Month Full of Celebration

Hi there Reader,

When I first started Seniors in Melbourne, my retired parents were lovingly roped in as my very first contributors.

Fast forward to today, and we now have a wonderful team of more than ten explorers who head out across Melbourne and Victoria, sharing their stories, recommendations, and tips for planning great days out.

We caught up on Sunday over coffee and cake at Chocolate Buddha in Federation Square — perfectly timed with Celebration Day, the official opening of the Victorian Seniors Festival. It was such a joy to connect in person, swap stories, and put real faces to names (as one of our contributors, Kathy, put it: “no AI here!”).

Kathy also shared how she kicked off her afternoon singing her heart out with some enthusiastic ukulele players before finishing the day with fellow contributor, Dimi, and their own loud and lively take on Bella Ciao. That kind of energy and joy sums up exactly what I love about our team — curious, spirited, and always ready to make the most of what’s on.

I’m so proud of what our contributors bring to Seniors in Melbourne — authentic local knowledge, humour, and a shared love of exploring. I’ll be sharing more about our contributors and their favourite finds over the coming weeks, and I can’t wait for you to meet them.

Warmly,

Amy

P.S. The Victorian Seniors Festival is underway, and we’ve continued adding to our highlight guides. You can find our top picks across metro Melbourne, regional Victoria, plus the best deals on offer this month. It’s the perfect excuse to plan some lovely outings — take a look at the guide and see what catches your eye!

Let's Explore Melbourne and Beyond

Magical Nights by Candlelight

Experience your favourite music in a whole new light with intimate concerts set against the glow of flickering candles.

Two violins, a viola and cello used so masterfully by the four musicians from Eclective Strings, hundreds of, (very realistic), electric candles flickering a warm, expectant ambience into all corners of the historic Civic Building and music, sometimes wafting, sometimes stirring, highlighting well-known silver-screen compositions by Hans Zimmer made this a very memorable evening.

Joke of the Day

I asked my date to go to the gym the other day. They never showed up. That's when I knew we wouldn't work out.

Hello Reader, A while back, I thought I’d done something clever by picking up a lime tree on Facebook Marketplace. I love using limes in summer drinks and cooking, so I was pretty pleased with myself. The first year it produced one or two very ordinary limes, but I figured it just needed a better home, so I found a spot in the garden and planted it out. Sure enough, the next year it was thriving, producing plenty of fruit. But when I tasted them, they were odd—round, not quite right, and...

Hello Reader, I’m thrilled to share something very special with you — our very own Melbourne City Map, free to download and print whenever you’re planning a day in the city. The idea came about in conversation with my dad, Chris, who happens to be a retired cartographer. Together, we thought it would be wonderful to create a highlight map just for our readers. At its core, the map showcases 10 free cultural attractions in Melbourne’s CBD, but it goes further — featuring tram routes, public...

Hi Reader, It's Chris here. I remember when Melbourne’s Docklands was little more than a working port and sprawling railway yard. To see how far it has come since those days is truly remarkable. Recently, we were called upon to visit The District Docklands for ourselves and to share its wonderful offering with you—and I must say, we were beyond impressed. Easily reached within the Free Tram Zone, we chose instead to walk from Southern Cross Station. The stroll over the preserved railway...
