Let's explore Melbourne and beyond

Melbourne’s Gold Rush Era

Discover stories of wealth, architecture, and history inside one of Melbourne’s most beautiful heritage buildings. Plus a new Swinging 60s exhibition just opened!

Just like the old “there’s no flies on you” joke… there’s no gold in the Treasury today but you can see where it’s been… and you can see so much more.
Exploring the twelve bluestone vaults in the basement plays on one’s imagination. Two thousand, or thereabouts, tonnes of gold bullion from the 1850s Gold Rush, passed through Melbourne and some of it was kept under lock and key, and armed guard, right where you can wander today. Read more here.

Hello Reader, Last week I found myself in a room full of the people shaping the future of tourism in Victoria. The occasion was the Victorian Tourism Industry Council’s annual Vision Summit — where operators, event organisers, government and industry leaders gather to talk about what’s ahead. One thing became very clear. Tourism isn’t just a “nice to have”. It’s a $46 billion industry in Victoria — bigger than mining and agriculture combined. I reflected on why I started Seniors in Melbourne...

Mostly Mozart

Hello Reader, I’ve recently started following the journey of a Melbourne retiree named Michael Kerrisk — and I can’t stop thinking about it. At 63, Michael has set himself a remarkable challenge: travelling from Melbourne to London without getting on a single plane. No quick long-haul flight, no shortcuts. Instead, trains, buses, ships and a carefully mapped route that will take him through Southeast Asia, across China and into Central Asia — the “Stans” — before eventually reaching Europe....

Hello Reader, It's Terrie here. Last week we took an easy train ride to the Showgrounds for the Caravan and Camping Show — and what a sight! From enormous luxury motorhomes (sadly beyond our budget!) to compact little vans, there were hundreds to step inside and compare. I quickly realised how useful it is to inspect them in person. Some were easy to climb into, others not so much — wobbly steps and missing handrails are worth noting. The Showgrounds is large, so I was grateful for the...
