How the city surprised me (and what I’ve been listening to lately)

Hello Reader,

Kathy here. Not so long ago, my relationship with the city was a simple one. In and out. One errand, one appointment, then straight back home. Practical, efficient — and, if I’m honest, a little rushed.

Something has shifted recently.

After joining one of the Seniors in Melbourne walking tours, the city seemed to open up to me in a new way. I found myself lingering. Wandering into arcades I’d previously hurried past. Sitting down for coffee rather than grabbing it on the run. Even treating myself — once or twice — thanks to a few very tempting recommendations along the way.

I’ve also grown more confident about trying new routes and trains. Not everything has gone smoothly (there have been a few cancellations and “well, not today then” moments), but one of the joys of this stage of life is having the time to be adaptable.

When I’m not out and about, I’ve been enjoying some thoughtful listening at home. ABC Radio National’s Life Matters recently featured a wonderfully funny segment called The Do Not Care Club, where people shared the things they’ve happily stopped worrying about. It made me laugh — and nod along. I also came away with a book recommendation about retirement by Jill Weeks, which I’m slowly making my way through.

I hope something in this week’s newsletter encourages you to explore a little differently too — whether that’s staying out longer, trying something new, or simply seeing familiar places with fresh eyes.

Warmly,
Kathy

Let's explore Melbourne and beyond

An Elegant City Escape

Now here's a gem of an Airbnb apartment that’s truly one-of-a-kind. Terrace balcony, free parking and a central location with stunning décor.

At a loose end in town for the night, my wife and I were pondering going to a movie but, once we settled into Lola, we were enchanted by the many fascinating artefacts and the displayed stories. So we decided to stay in.
With background music from the working record player and whilst sipping complimentary port from antique glasses, we sat and read. And allowed the relaxing ambience of Lola to rekindle old memories into the night.

Hello Reader, Last week I found myself in a room full of the people shaping the future of tourism in Victoria. The occasion was the Victorian Tourism Industry Council’s annual Vision Summit — where operators, event organisers, government and industry leaders gather to talk about what’s ahead. One thing became very clear. Tourism isn’t just a “nice to have”. It’s a $46 billion industry in Victoria — bigger than mining and agriculture combined. I reflected on why I started Seniors in Melbourne...

Mostly Mozart

Hello Reader, I’ve recently started following the journey of a Melbourne retiree named Michael Kerrisk — and I can’t stop thinking about it. At 63, Michael has set himself a remarkable challenge: travelling from Melbourne to London without getting on a single plane. No quick long-haul flight, no shortcuts. Instead, trains, buses, ships and a carefully mapped route that will take him through Southeast Asia, across China and into Central Asia — the “Stans” — before eventually reaching Europe....

Hello Reader, It's Terrie here. Last week we took an easy train ride to the Showgrounds for the Caravan and Camping Show — and what a sight! From enormous luxury motorhomes (sadly beyond our budget!) to compact little vans, there were hundreds to step inside and compare. I quickly realised how useful it is to inspect them in person. Some were easy to climb into, others not so much — wobbly steps and missing handrails are worth noting. The Showgrounds is large, so I was grateful for the...
