Hello Reader, Kathy here. Not so long ago, my relationship with the city was a simple one. In and out. One errand, one appointment, then straight back home. Practical, efficient — and, if I’m honest, a little rushed. Something has shifted recently. After joining one of the Seniors in Melbourne walking tours, the city seemed to open up to me in a new way. I found myself lingering. Wandering into arcades I’d previously hurried past. Sitting down for coffee rather than grabbing it on the run. Even treating myself — once or twice — thanks to a few very tempting recommendations along the way. I’ve also grown more confident about trying new routes and trains. Not everything has gone smoothly (there have been a few cancellations and “well, not today then” moments), but one of the joys of this stage of life is having the time to be adaptable. When I’m not out and about, I’ve been enjoying some thoughtful listening at home. ABC Radio National’s Life Matters recently featured a wonderfully funny segment called The Do Not Care Club, where people shared the things they’ve happily stopped worrying about. It made me laugh — and nod along. I also came away with a book recommendation about retirement by Jill Weeks, which I’m slowly making my way through. I hope something in this week’s newsletter encourages you to explore a little differently too — whether that’s staying out longer, trying something new, or simply seeing familiar places with fresh eyes. Hello Reader, I’m really pleased to share a new partnership with Transport Victoria — all about encouraging more of us to get out and explore using public transport. The timing couldn’t be better. With free public transport across Victoria throughout April and May, many people are rediscovering just how easy it is to move around without the cost of fuel or parking. But here’s the part I think is worth holding onto long after May ends:Seniors myki holders travel free every weekend, year-round,...
Hello Reader, It’s Marjie here, With ANZAC Day coming up this Saturday, I’ve found myself reflecting a little more deeply this year. My father served as a navigator in the RAAF during the war, and later in life — in his late 70s — he wrote a poem after visiting Bomana War Cemetery in Papua New Guinea. It was the only poem he ever wrote, and it’s stayed with me ever since. More recently, someone from my camera club used AI to recreate his voice and read the poem aloud. Hearing those words...
Hello Reader, I was chatting recently with Trevor, who’s just retired, when our conversation drifted — as it often does — to day trips and longer drives. He’s always been someone who enjoys getting out of the city, whether it’s a run to Ballarat, a wander through Bendigo, or a longer road trip when the mood strikes. What surprised me was how naturally he talked about doing all of this in his electric vehicle. Trevor bought his EV a couple of years ago and says he’s never looked back. For...
