Hi Reader, Chris here. If you’ve ever wandered through an art gallery and admired the paintings without really stopping to think about the stories behind them—you’re not alone. I’ve done the same. But something shifted for me during a recent visit to the NGV Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square. It was my first time joining a guided tour—and it completely changed the way I experienced the art. Our guide, a passionate volunteer, brought each room to life, especially when she introduced a stunning 3 x 5 metre painting called Ngayarta Kujarra by twelve First Nations women from three generations. As she gently explained the meaning behind the shapes and colours, I saw the work not just as a visual piece, but as a connection to Country and culture. It was moving, enlightening—and something I would’ve missed entirely without her insight. The collection also includes iconic works by well-known Australian artists—many you might recognise from calendars or cards—and hearing the stories behind them made the whole experience that much richer. Whether you’re a regular gallery-goer or haven’t been in years, I highly recommend joining one of the free tours. You’ll come away seeing things in a whole new light—just like I did. —Chris

Hi Reader, My dad, Chris, recently said that our weekly outings have taken us to some fascinating places—but one of the most memorable was our visit to the Koorie Heritage Trust. It really stayed with us. After wandering through some of Melbourne’s oldest colonial buildings, it was striking to then stand inside a contemporary space that connects to a culture tens of thousands of years older. With National Reconciliation Week approaching (27 May – 3 June), it’s a timely moment to reflect on...
Hello Reader, With Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May) upon us, I’ve been reflecting on how important it is to care for our mental wellbeing—especially during life changes like retirement. It turns out that staying mentally healthy doesn’t have to mean anything complicated. Things like keeping a routine, staying socially connected, and making time for regular movement can all make a big difference. I’ve found that retired or semi-retired doesn’t mean slowing down—it often means having a...
Hi there Reader, It's Diane here. I hadn’t been to Chadstone in years — and wow, has it changed! It just keeps growing. You could easily spend a full week exploring it properly, especially with all the new food options. On my visit, I stumbled across a clever AI-powered recipe tool in their latest food precinct. With a little help from a very friendly concierge, I gave it a go. I’m coeliac, so I added that into the notes, chose Italian and salmon, and within seconds it had suggested five...
