The guided tour that changed how I see art

Hi Reader,

Chris here. If you’ve ever wandered through an art gallery and admired the paintings without really stopping to think about the stories behind them—you’re not alone. I’ve done the same. But something shifted for me during a recent visit to the NGV Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square.

It was my first time joining a guided tour—and it completely changed the way I experienced the art. Our guide, a passionate volunteer, brought each room to life, especially when she introduced a stunning 3 x 5 metre painting called Ngayarta Kujarra by twelve First Nations women from three generations. As she gently explained the meaning behind the shapes and colours, I saw the work not just as a visual piece, but as a connection to Country and culture. It was moving, enlightening—and something I would’ve missed entirely without her insight.

The collection also includes iconic works by well-known Australian artists—many you might recognise from calendars or cards—and hearing the stories behind them made the whole experience that much richer.

Whether you’re a regular gallery-goer or haven’t been in years, I highly recommend joining one of the free tours. You’ll come away seeing things in a whole new light—just like I did.

—Chris

Melbourne's Most Charming Garden

Stroll through lush landscapes, relax at the café, and uncover a touch of history.

Cooks Cottage was another surprise and a first-time visit for me. The rooms were small and the feeling of how a large family managed to live in such a small area with only basic amenities drives it home how fortunate we are in this 21st century with our many comforts and luxuries.
I was surprised to hear that the cottage was actually James Cook’s father’s cottage which was transported to Melbourne, from England, for a special celebration.
