Something you may need to hear today

Hi Reader,

It’s hard to believe Christmas Eve is already here. For many of us, this is a time filled with family, faith, tradition, and a bit of last-minute organising. But I also know this season can feel lonely or heavy, especially if plans look a little different these days. If that’s you, please don’t hesitate to reach out — to neighbours, friends, local groups, or community organisations. There are people who would genuinely love to share a friendly chat or a moment of company today and tomorrow.

If you're looking for a place to gather in reflection or celebration on Christmas Day, we’ve put together a list of church services happening across Melbourne. You can find it here.

I also want to share a personal invitation from Ian, who is part of the Melbourne Social Club. For the past 18 years, they’ve hosted a relaxed, welcoming Christmas Day picnic at Queen Victoria Gardens — and it’s completely free, open to everyone, and created especially for those who may not be spending the day with family. More than 100 people usually come along to enjoy food, conversation, and a peaceful spot under the trees. Simply bring your own picnic, something comfortable to sit on, and perhaps a game to share.

If you’d like some company tomorrow, Ian and the group would be delighted to have you join them. Find more information here.

Wishing you a gentle, joyful Christmas Eve — in whatever way feels right for you.

Warmly,
Amy and the Seniors in Melbourne team

P.S. If you’re still hunting for a last-minute gift (and as my mum always says, if it wasn’t for the last minute, nothing would get done!), our charity gift ideas article has some wonderful options you can organise today.

And after the gifts are unwrapped and the plates are cleared, why not settle in with our website for some Melbourne outing ideas to enjoy this summer.

Now, no one has said a word about our weekly jokes… not a peep… but our clever email system tells us the truth: hundreds of you click on them every single week. Clearly, there’s a silent army of pun-loving readers out there. So, in the spirit of ending the year with a groan and a grin, we’ve rounded up our top terrible (grand)dad jokes of the year. A Christmas Carol

Hello Reader, Diane again here. I wanted to share something new I’ve started doing each week that has brought me a lot of joy. A friend of mine, Cheryl, is involved with Soroptimist International of Geelong, and through her I’ve begun volunteering at The Gordon, spending an hour or so chatting in English with migrants and international students. Members from SI Geelong volunteer regularly for the English as an Additional Language program, helping students — many of whom are refugees or newly...
