Check-in & Chill Out

A city getaway that feels less like checking into a hotel and more like visiting old friends

An outstanding hotel stay I remember was over forty years ago when I spent a week relaxing on one of those small dots on a map of the Pacific Ocean. What made that experience memorable was the welcoming way the islander staff made me feel, like I was part of their family.
Similar emotions were evoked this week when we stayed overnight in inner-city Melbourne at The Dorsett.

Hello Reader, With Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May) upon us, I’ve been reflecting on how important it is to care for our mental wellbeing—especially during life changes like retirement. It turns out that staying mentally healthy doesn’t have to mean anything complicated. Things like keeping a routine, staying socially connected, and making time for regular movement can all make a big difference. I’ve found that retired or semi-retired doesn’t mean slowing down—it often means having a...

Dame Vera Lynn

Hi there Reader, It's Diane here. I hadn’t been to Chadstone in years — and wow, has it changed! It just keeps growing. You could easily spend a full week exploring it properly, especially with all the new food options. On my visit, I stumbled across a clever AI-powered recipe tool in their latest food precinct. With a little help from a very friendly concierge, I gave it a go. I’m coeliac, so I added that into the notes, chose Italian and salmon, and within seconds it had suggested five...

Titanic VR Experience

Hi there Reader, I recently had a brilliant afternoon at Playing Second Fiddle! It’s not often a show has the whole room beaming, but this one did — and then some. One audience member summed it up perfectly when they simply shouted, “Fantastic!” alongside the applause. And honestly, they weren’t wrong. Created by the talented Victoria Mantynen, Sincerely Yours is more than just a performance program. It’s a celebration of community, connection, and musical theatre. After the music, you’re...
